Pedicure Day for the Cows
Today was hoof trimming day for the cows. Thomsen Livestock Services came out to the farm from Turner, Oregon with their mobile tilt table. These guys run a slick operation. They set up some livestock panels to guide the cows into the shute and then tilt the shute to allow John to work on their hooves.
Highland cows need their hooves trimmed at least once a year. In the past, our vet has trimmed the herd but this process allowed for a more thorough pedicure.
Fortunately, our cows are quite docile and friendly and allow us to halter them to lead them into the panel corral. Once in the corral they are easily guided into the shute and secured before the whole shebang is tilted sideways to allow John Thomsen to trim away.
The whole process took less than 10 minutes per cow and now they are good to go until next year.
