Farm Fans Rejoice: We’ve Got Ourselves a Brand-New Baby Bull!

We are excited to welcome our new calf, Nelson.  Nelson (as in Willie) was named as a tribute to my late father-in-law who was a lifetime Willie Nelson fan.  I have been using names of country singers for our calves and this calf continued the trend.  This little ginger bull is Maple’s calf sired by Licorice our mini bull, and was born on 6/8/23 at 6:10 pm.   He was born strong and healthy and was standing up and nursing within 30 minutes of birth.

For the first three days, Maple and Nelson were separated from the fold to allow them to bond and allow Nelson to nurse uninterrupted.  We had great weather for calving with warm temps and only very light rain.  I could not have asked for better conditions.  On the 3rd day, I successfully introduced Maple’s baby to the other cows and they now cohabitate as a group.

It is so fun to see Brooks with his new half-brother and how sweet they are together.

Like Brooks, Nelson will be introduced to as many people and situations as possible during his time with us to make sure he's calm and gentle, which will make him easier to manage as he grows older.  I will begin introducing the halter and training him to accept the hater and lead so he is easy to move and handle for vet visits and whatever life holds.  Like Books, Nelson will be available for sale once he reaches six months old and is weaned.

The breeding program here at Black Horse Farm is to have a calf from Maple and Blossom each year and sell the calves to make room for the next year’s babies.  I can guarantee you that selling these babies is going to be very hard for me.  I love them so much and enjoy training them and watching them grow.  Farm life truly is the best life for me.
